Discover the Deakin difference
Universities have a special part to play in reconciliation between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and non-Indigenous Australians. Deakin welcomes the responsibility of educating the next generation of ambitious First Nations thinkers, alongside our commitment to promoting issues of social justice and human rights.
The National Indigenous Knowledges Education Research Innovation (NIKERI) Institute enables Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to study for short, intensive periods on campus. This means they can remain connected to their families and communities while studying with us.
The Indigenous Tutorial Network (ITN) provides tutors in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities to support students' relationships between university and home. ITN tutors not only assist you academically but actively promote strengthening your cultural identity.
We also host INDIGO, the International Indigenous Design Network, where researchers are helping to develop the world’s first international Indigenous design charter.
Whether you're learning, teaching, researching or working in a professional capacity at Deakin, opportunities to engage with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and knowledge are always encouraged.
NIKERI Institute
Through Community-Based Education programs, the NIKERI Institute enables Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians the flexibility to gain access to higher education while still being able to maintain family and community obligations.
