SSAF
While at university, you may need to pay a Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF). The SSAF helps pay for vital services to enhance your experience at Deakin.
Use your discounts
As a student with a valid student card, you’re entitled to all sorts of discounts at retail outlets, service providers, cinemas, gyms, museums and even food outlets. Do your research and find out where the discounts are. The Victorian Government's Youth Central website is a good place to start.
Living costs for international students
If you're coming from overseas to study at Deakin, you'll want to know how to manage your money to get the most out of your time here. We can help you figure out your living costs, banking and how to make a budget.
Getting around
Public transport
To get to Deakin, you can catch a train or bus across Melbourne, Geelong, Warrnambool and other regional areas, or hop on a tram to get to inner-city suburbs of Melbourne.
Many students will be eligible for a concession card to reduce the cost of your travel.
Parking
If you're not living on campus, driving will be the most expensive option (due to parking fees), followed by public transport. Cycling, walking, or car-pooling are great alternatives. Deakin has fantastic facilities for cyclists and a free carpool matching service.
Accommodation
Different accommodation options have different costs. Whether you'd like the convenience of living on campus or a share house with friends, we've got the information to help you find your new home.
Health
When on campus, you'll have access to medical centres that provide free consultations for current students with a Medicare card or valid Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC).
Budget planning
There are a range of online tools that can help you manage your finances and plan a budget. The MoneySmart budget planner is a great tool that helps you build an overall picture of your money – where it’s coming from and how you’re spending it.
Food
If you're on campus, there are a range of food options for different tastes, dietary requirements and budgets.
Entertainment
It's hard to know how much money you'll need for entertainment, so try breaking it down into different types: shopping, movies, sports and so on. University isn't just about learning, it's about being social too.
Clubs and memberships
Join a Deakin club or society to meet new friends or learn a new skill. There may be costs involved for things like equipment or travel.
Deakin University Student Association (DUSA) is a community with services for all students including clubs, advocacy services, events, sporting programs, trips and short courses. Memberships start from as little as $15.
